Have you ever had a cut that just wouldn’t heal? A scar that was red and puffy forever? How about dry skin or chapped lips? If you have not tried an herbal salve to treat these wounds, you are missing out on a great remedy!
What is a Salve?
A salve is an ointment that is made from butter, oil and wax that can be applied topically to any area of the body. Adding medicinal botanicals provides an increased benefit that can exponentially speed up healing times. For example, Calendula flowers have anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, Plantain soothes skin and speeds up healing time, and Yarrow flowers and Chickweed assist in calming burns and rashes.
I have been evolving my own salve formula over the past 30 years, which I started concocting long before I was in medical school. In fact, I found a basic formula for a salve out of a book that was written in the early 1900s, and after researching many herbs, I started making the salve myself.
The thing about a salve is, you don’t need it until you need it…like that time I was making homemade strawberry preserves and the pot boiled over, leaving a hot sticky mess all over the stove. While trying to clean up the mess, I inadvertently pulled off one of the electric burners with my mitt-less hand, which resulted in bad burns on three of my fingers.
Without a traditional first aid kit in sight, I reached for the salve I made a few weeks earlier. I applied a generous amount of the salve every few minutes for the next hour. The pain slowly disappeared and I could see the redness fading. After an hour, I wiped off the salve and to my surprise all the swelling, redness and markings on my fingers were gone. There was no pain or any indication that there were ever burns.
Over the years, I’ve made variations of salve for specific indications such as psoriasis or wounds. After years of fine-tuning, I’m pleased to share my Healing Salve, which combines 10 different therapeutic botanicals with organic olive oil and beeswax for a magical skin-healing recipe. The recipe is very close to the original formula that was made so many years ago and had such outstanding results. Tip: add a container of salve to your first aid kit so that when you need it, you have it, too!
