Most of us have tasted a food that is super bitter like citrus peels or dandelion greens. The taste can make your eyes water and lips pucker all on its own. Bitter foods and herbs have powerful health benefits, providing digestive stimulation and hormone balance. But what about bitters in a cocktail?
Everyone has probably seen a bartender add a few splashes of bitters into a glass of brown liquor. But why bitters in alcohol? Bitters tend to balance out sweet or sour tastes and make a drink more complex and complete. Use our Dr. Harter’s Botanicals bittersweet formula to add some special amazingness to your best cocktails.
Most bartenders use them liberally with whiskey or bourbon but you can also try with champagne or dark rum, such as in the recipes below:

Champagne Cocktail:
- 1 raw, organic sugar cube
- 3 dash Dr. Harter’s Botanicals bitters
- 4 oz champagne
Place one cube sugar in champagne, add bitters and pour champagne over. Enjoy!
Dark and Stormy:
- 3 dash Dr. Harter’s Botanicals bitters
- Squeeze of lime
- 4 oz Ginger beer
- 3 oz dark rum
Fill a short cocktail glass with ice. Add in bitters, squeeze of lime and ginger beer. Slowly pour rum on top to create a “stormy” look. Stir to combine and Enjoy!
